Surf Highway 45 (Taranaki coastline – North Island) – Dubbed Surf Highway 45, the coastal road between Hāwera and New Plymouth (located five hours south of Auckland via car) is famed for its surf breaks, which include Stent Road, Spot X and the Kūmara Patch. Taranaki locals have ridden the waves since the 1950s, and some became international champions. The region has also produced a number of surfboard designers.
